Rise of Empires: Ottoman, Season 1 Review

“Constantinople, either I conquer you or you conquer me.” Fatih Sultan Mehmet (Mehmet the Conqueror)

After the death of his older brothers, Murad II summons his son Mehmet to the capital and sends him to Amasya for training immediately. Although Mehmet is a naughty child, he speaks five languages when he is 12 years old. Candarli Halil Pasha gives him a tight education and beats him abundantly because of his mischief. In 1444 Sultan Murad II decides to retire and leaves the throne to Mehmet. Thus, Mehmet becomes the youngest Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Mehmet wants to conquer Constantinople at the age of 13, but other helpers, especially Candarli Halil Pasha, object to this. Candarli Halil Pasha visits the former Sultan Murad and tells him about the dangers around the Ottoman Empire.

Then Murad II comes back to the capital and takes the throne back from his son. This angers Mehmet, but he has nothing to do. Sultan Murad surrounds Constantinople but fails as a result of these three months. Receiving the news of his father’s death, Shehzade (Prince) Mehmet immediately leaves Manisa and sets off. Shehzade Mehmet meets with Sadrazam (Grand Vizier) Halil Pasha, who arrives in Edirne (Adrianople). Mara Ana (Mara Brankovic) is his closest supporter. Mehmet the Conqueror comes to the throne but needs great success to prove his strength and authority. The fact that there are people who do not trust him around the Sultan Mehmet activates his enemies. Romans want to use Shehzade Osman against the Ottoman Empire. In response, Sultan Mehmet decides to build a fortress on the European side of Istanbul to cut aid from the Black Sea to Byzantium.

Constantine XI wants to wait for Catholic help from Europe. Loukas Notaras Constantine’s vice president says he preferred to see the Sultan’s turban rather than seeing the catholic cone in the Byzantine territory. Loukas Notaras is one of the wealthiest men of Byzantium and even all the Balkans and does not want a war in the future. Sultan Mehmet knows that Halil Pasha is against this war and that he has close relations with Byzantium. Sultan Mehmet has a dream one night and he sees a red apple in Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya). Sultan Mehmet thinks that the meaning of this dream is a divine command to conquer Constantinople. Sultan Mehmet prepares an army of 80,000 people in six months. To demolish the city walls, Sultan Mehmet asks an engineer named Urban to make cannons eight meters long called “The Basilica (Ottoman Cannon)”.

These cannons will be the largest cannons ever made in world history. But Constantine XI does not stay idle at this time and brings Genoese mercenary Giovanni Giustiniani Longo and his army to Constantinople. Janissaries were the foundation of Sultan Mehmet’s army, and this great army started moving towards Constantinople in March 1453. The Ottoman army reached Constantinople on April 2, that is, on Easter day. According to Hadith, “The Islamic state will surely conquer Constantinople. What a great commander who conquered it. What a beautiful army of that state’s army. ” This hadith is very important and sacred for Sultan Mehmet. On April 6, Sultan Mehmet sent a peace offer to Emperor Constantine for the last time, but Emperor Constantine did not accept this merciful offer.

With the order of Sultan Mehmet, Basilica cannons start firing on the Byzantine walls. These cannons shoot non-stop day and night and drag the whole city into chaos. Giustiniani Longo orders to bring together the destroyed parts of the walls and to build a new wall. Six days have passed, but the walls are still standing. Giustiniani Longo plans attacks against Ottoman soldiers. The main purpose of these attacks is to prey on the Ottoman army. The attack of 2000 soldiers with mercenaries brought by Giustiniani will surprise Ottoman soldiers. Sultan Mehmet has been firing at the Byzantine walls with cannons for two weeks and no longer wants to wait. Sultan Mehmet and the commanders decide to raid one night after examining the walls. Sultan Mehmet made a speech to his soldiers that night and went on the attack to get the Red Apple. The army of Giustiniani and Italian soldiers stopped hundreds of Ottoman soldiers attacking them non-stop. This situation overthrows Sultan Mehmet. Now Sultan Mehmet should be fast because the Genoese navy, loaded with soldiers and materials, is coming to Constantinople.

The Ottoman Empire has a strong fleet but this fleet does not provide any benefit as it cannot enter the Golden Horn. Ottoman admiral Suleiman Baltoghlu took the task of stopping the upcoming Italian ships. Four Christian ships enter the sea of Marmara. Meanwhile, the soldiers of Sultan Mehmet dig tunnels under the walls. They try to demolish the walls using these tunnels. Under the leadership of Scottish John Grant, the soldiers dug tunnels inside the city, preventing the progress of the Ottoman tunnels. The Ottoman fleet started to shoot Italian ships with firearms and a fire started on the ships. But Italian ships come side by side and resist to prevent Ottoman soldiers from getting on their ships. The wind in the sea helps Italian ships and four Italian ships enter the Golden Horn at the last minute. 140 Ottoman ships cannot stop four Italian ships and Sultan Mehmet summons Baltoghlu with him. Baltoghlu is forgiven when Halil Pasha intervenes at the last minute. Loukas Notaras sneaks out of the walls and talks to Candarli Halil Pasha. Loukas Notaras says that Sultan Mehmet must accept defeat or it is only a matter of time before the united Christian army arrives. While Sultan Mehmet is thinking one night, he finds a way to get the Ottoman ships into the Golden Horn and tells it to Zaganos Pasha the next day. Sultan Mehmet wants to carry the navy over land.

76 ships belonging to the Ottoman Navy will advance from the forest area of two and a half kilometers and land on the Golden Horn. Meanwhile, rumors about 40 ships sent by the Pope improve the morale of the people and soldiers in the city. Sultan Mehmet orders the artillery to bombard the Byzantine ships over Galata, while the road is opened for the ships. The cut trees are lubricated with animal grease, so the ships will slip smoothly. All the ships are transported overnight and on the morning of 22 April, all the Byzantine people see Turkish ships in the Golden Horn. This situation forces the Byzantine defense strategy to change. The guns, which are lowered to the port of Galata, start to shoot the city from a new front. Giustiniani wants to raid the Ottoman ships and Constantine XI approves this decision. Ana, coming out of the Byzantine walls, goes to Sultan Mehmet even if she does not want to, and tells him that the Genoese will attack the Ottoman navy. After a few delays, the attack to burn Ottoman ships is done on April 28, but after the information from Galata tower, Ottoman soldiers get rid of this attack.

One morning, Sultan Mehmet goes alone to the Byzantine walls disguises as Zaganos Pasha and talks to Giustiniani. He offers him more and better than the Byzantine emperor offers and goes. But Giustiniani rejects this generous offer. Byzantine is helpless and poor. So, the gold and silver from the churches in the city are melted and the mercenaries are paid. In mid-May, rumors come true and the navy from Venice appears in the Aegean sea. Mara leaves Serbia and hurries to Mehmet. Mara says what she saw about the stars and the moon, and that this is a sign for the attack. The Byzantine people, who saw the lunar eclipse (the bloody moon), are terrified and depressed. Sultan Mehmet returns to the camp and orders his soldiers to prepare for the attack.

Lord Loukas offers to escape to the emperor, but Emperor Constantine XI says he chose to die in this city. Meanwhile, the Venetian fleet is learned to be at least a week away, and this is devastating news for the emperor. On May 29, 1453, upon the order of Sultan Mehmet, Ottoman cannons started the intense fire again. Emperor prepares his soldiers for a final battle. The Ottoman army attacks in waves. First Bashi-bazouk then regular army attacks. Giustiniani and his soldiers begin to attack with small cannons. The Ottoman army suffered heavy losses but continued to attack. The first two waves cannot overcome the Byzantine defense and Sultan Mehmet sends Janissaries. After this attack, Giustiniani has to retreat and severely injured Giustiniani leaves the battlefield. Seeing Giustiniani is gone, the soldiers are depressed and the defense line is broken. Janissaries cross the walls and enter the city. Constantinople fell on May 29, Mehmet the Conqueror enters the city. Sultan Mehmet goes straight to Hagia Sophia. Lord Loukas is captured and brought in front of Sultan Mehmet. Loukas wants to give Sultan a gift, but Sultan does not accept it. Lord Loukas says that his intention is good and that he has already spoken to Candarli Halil Pasha about peace. Sultan Mehmet calls Halil Pasha and talks to him. Then he sends Halil Pasha to next to Lord Loukas. Mara comes to the Sultan Mehmet and says that he has the red apple now.
