The conquest of Constantinople was an important mark in Turkish and world history. The city had been under the strong control of the Roman Empire over a thousand years , but in 1453, it was conquered by a Young and passionate Ottoman Turk Sultan Mehmed II with his army, who was just 21 years old at the time.

The blockade itself remained for 53 days. During the siege, Mehmed Fatih made numerous plans and strategies to break the city’s walls. One of the most famous of these tactics was the use of giant mounted guns. These cannons were not easy to handle as they had to be brought across land and sea to reach the city. These mounted guns were so large that it is reported that their sound could be heard out of the  way to nearby countries. They managed to fire balls weighing over 1,000 pounds, and ruin the city’s wall.

All the time of the blockade, both empires faced high losses including death and injuries, but at the end it was the Ottomans who won this battle.  When the city was occupied by the Turks, it was mentioned that the Ottomans were so astonished and amazed by its beauty that they didn’t loot or burn it, instead bringing back to rob the churches and grab the treasure troves. Constantinople was afterwards renamed as Istanbul and developed into the capital city of the Ottoman Empire.
