Introduction of Kizilelma

None had managed to permanently take and hold the city. Mehmed II, known as “Mehmed the Conqueror”, became sultan in 1444. He was determined to capture Constantinople and prepared meticulously, including the construction of a fortress (Rumeli Hisari) on the European side of the Bosporus Strait to control sea traffic and isolate the city.

Mehmed amassed a force said to number between 80,000 to 200,000, while the defenders of Constantinople were only about 7,000 to 12,000 strong. Mehmed utilized massive cannons, including the famous “Basilica”, which were key in breaching the formidable Theodosian Walls of Constantinople.

To circumvent the chain guarding the Golden Horn (an inlet of the Bosporus on the city’s northern side), Mehmed ordered his ships to be dragged overland using greased logs, effectively bypassing the defenses and entering the harbor. On May 29, 1453, after a 53-day siege, the Ottomans launched their final assault. Despite fierce resistance, the city’s defenses were breached, and Constantinople fell to the Ottomans.
